Sebastiaan was given the opportunity in Twente to make innovative spin off business successful.

This article is part of the series 'Twente Leeft!' Here you can read personal stories about working and living in Twente. According to the talents we speak, Twente is a good place to be. The beautiful nature, the space, the down-to-earth mentality; all things that characterize Twente. In addition, there are plenty of career opportunities! Twente has many innovative, international and future-oriented business that cry out for personnel. Want to know what Twente has to offer? The story of Sebastiaan Haanappel can be found below.

Favorable business climate

Sebastiaan Haanappel is the father of two young children and co-owner of a successful spin-off. He grew up in the Randstad and also lived in Kampen for a while. So he is not originally from Twente, but settled here when he started a master's program at the University of Twente (UT). In Zwolle, he studied Mechanical Engineering at a higher professional education level, he wanted to deepen his knowledge and thus came into contact with the UT. The specialist knowledge of thermoplastic composites in Twente and the favorable business climate for innovative and creative spin-offs ultimately made him stay here.

TPRC

During his studies, Sebastiaan was already very interested in composites, a lightweight material that is widely used in the aviation industry. He was lucky that Twente is the place to be when it comes to thermoplastic composites, because the TPRC research center (ThermoPlastic composites Research Center) is located in Enschede. Ultimately, he was the first PhD candidate to work at TPRC. He researched how thermoplastic composites behave during production. With this knowledge, Sebastiaan was able to put AniForm Engineering on the map.

“I think it has a long-term global implication. If you can produce smarter, it reduces raw materials and emissions.”

AniForm Engineering

Sebastiaan and his team are developing software that simulates the behavior of composite material during production. The software is mainly supplied to the aerospace and automotive industry, where all kinds of structural parts are produced from composite material. AniForm's smart tool helps these companies to predict how production will proceed and how the product will develop and behave in practice. “Having a better understanding of material behavior during production helps technicians to reason better where a process and product optimum will be found. This means that companies can develop and produce products much more efficiently,” says Sebastiaan. This is not only cost-effective but ultimately contributes to a more sustainable world. “I think it has a long-term global implication. If you can produce smarter, that reduces raw materials and emissions. For example, by reducing the use of materials, constructing parts more optimally and lightly, and using resources more efficiently. Composites are used in air and road vehicles, so if you can make the parts lighter, it will also reduce fuel consumption and emissions.” Ultimately, the AniForm Engineering software, therefore, makes a very positive contribution to a solution to environmental problems.

"That is such a luxury, that freedom"

Room for innovation

“Although I am not from here, I like it in Twente. You will be in nature within minutes, and the people are nice and caring. I like mountain biking, and you can also enjoy cycling here. That is such a luxury, that freedom.” Sebastiaan thinks that Twente is the perfect place for him to develop his business. “The fact that it is quiet here and the atmosphere is not competitive as the city allows you to be as creative as possible. If there is too much pressure on being creative, it will only backfire. To innovate, you need that mental space. You can do that very well here, also as a company."
